Rit þetta um tölur um fjölmiðla 0£ menningarmál er hið
fyrsta sinnar tegundar sem Hagstofa Islands gefur út. Reyndar
er þetta í fyrsta sinn sem ráðist er í útgáfu sérstaks rits sem
hefur einvörðungu að geyma tölulegt efni um íslenska
fjölmiðla og menningarmál.
A undanfomum árum hefur Hagstofa íslands ekki farið
varhluta af auknum áhuga innlendra sem erlendra aðila á
tölulegum upplýsingum um þessa málaflokka. Kemur þar
fjölmargt til, en trúlega vegur þar þyngst sú staðreynd að
flölmiðlun og menningarstarfsemi hvers konar gegnir sífellt
veigameira hlutverki í samfélagslegu og efnahagslegu tilliti.
Astæða þess að Hagstofan ræðst í útgáfú þessa rits er því ekki
síst sú að koma til móts við þá þörf sem augljóslega er á
aðgengilegu talnaefni um fjölmiðla og menningarmál. Fram
til þessa hefur birting tölulegra upplýsinga um þessi mál
verið næsta takmörkuð og einskorðast við fáar yfirlitstöflur
í öðru útgáfúefni Hagstofunnar, og/eða verið lítt aðgengilegt
fyrir þorra fólks í skýrslum ijölþjóðlegra stofnana sem
Hagstofan hefúr komið efni á framfæri við.
Efni ritisins er af margvíslegum toga og spannar talnaeínið
langt tímabil. Elstu tölur eru frá því um síðustu aldamót og
þær yngstu frá því í ár. Gögn Hagstofunnar um fjölmiðla og
menningu er uppistaða efnisins, en skipulögð söfnun talna-
efnis á vegum Hagstofúnnar á þessu sviði nær allt aftur til
þess tíma er ísland gerðist aðili að Menningar- og fræðslu-
stofnun Sameinuðu þjóðanna, UNESCO, árið 1964.
Aðdragandinn að þessari útgáfu er orðinn nokkur. Ragnar
Karlsson hefur unnið við efnisöflun, úrvinnslu og samningu
þessa rits ífá því það kom fyrst til umræðu innan veggja
Hagstofúnnar fyrir um tveimur árum síðan. Verkið reyndist
viðameira en svo það yrði hrist fr am úr erminni. Nauðsynlegt
reyndist að leggjatalsverða vinnu í að endurmeta og samræma
tiltæk gögn og afla nýrra þannig að framsetning þeirra væri
í sem mestu samræmi við alþjóðlega staðla og venjur sem
skapast hafa um birtingu talna í þeim málaflokkum sem hér
um ræðir.
A hinum ýmsu vinnslustigum þessa rits hefúr verið haft
samband við fjölmarga aðila, innlenda og erlenda, sem
góðfúslega hafa aðstoðað við öflun gagna og veitt góð ráð
varðandi framsetningu efnis. Öllum þeim sem hlut eiga að
máli eru færðar bestu þakkir fyrir aðstoðina. Ritið hefúr verið
undirbúið að fúllu til útgáfú innan Hagstofunnar. Ragnar
Karlsson sá um enska þýðingu töflu- og myndatexta ásamt
Jónínu M. Guðnadóttur. Magnús S. Magnússon las ritið yfir
í handriti með tilliti til efnis og ífamsetningar. Bemard J.
Scudder þýddi enskan inngang. Sigurborg Steingrímsdóttir
annaðist umbrot bókarinnar og frágang mynda.

Preface
This publication on media and cultural statistics is the first of
its kind published by Statistics Iceland. As a matter of fact, this
is the first time that any Icelandic publisher launches a special
publication dedicated exclusively to statistical material on
Icelandic media and culture.
In recent years Statistics Iceland has not failed to observe the
growing interest in statistical data on these subjects, among
domestic as well as foreign bodies. There are a number of
reasons forthis interest; the predominant one is presumably the
fact that media and cultural activities of all kinds play an ever
increasing role in sociefy and the economy. Consequently, the
primary reason why Statistics Iceland decided to launch this
publication was a desire to meet the obvious need for accessi-
ble statistical data on media and culture. Until now published
data on media and culture activities has been quite Iimited and
confmed chiefly to a few summarized tables included in other
material published by Statistics Iceland. What is more, this
material has not been readily accessible to the general public,
often enclosed in various reports of intemational agencies that
Statistics Iceland has supplied with such data.
The material for this book has been retrieved ffom a variety
of sources and the statistical data covers a long period. Thus the
oldest statistics date ífom the tum of the last century and the
latest ones refer to the present year. The principal source is data
on media and culture, which has been systematically collected
at Statistics Iceland ever since Iceland became a member of
UNESCO, in 1964.
The preparation of this work has taken quite some time.
Ragnar Karlsson has worked on the collection, processing
and compilation of this publication since its creation was
first envisaged at Statistics Iceland about two years ago.
Completing the work tumed out to be too onerous a task to
finish in a short period of time. The available data needed
considerable revision and coordination, and new data had
to be collected in order to make the presentation of the whole
comply as far as possible with intemational standards and
practices established in this field.
At the various stages of producing this work, Statistics
Iceland contacted a number of people and organizations,
both Icelandic and foreign, and these have kindly assisted in
collecting the data as well as offering good advice on the
presentation of the material. This book has been completed
for publication at Statistics Iceland. Ragnar Karlsson, to-
gether with Jónina M. Guðnadóttir, was responsible for
translation of the text in tables and figures. Magnús S.
Magnússon read the manuscript in relation to its content and
presentation. Bernard J. Scudder translated the introduction
into English. The layout was in the hands of Sigurborg
Steingrímsdóttir.
