Museum and garden. A permanent institution, open to
the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communi-
cates and exhibits, for purposes of study, education and
enjoyment, material evidence of man and his environment.
In addition to museums as such, the following entities are
included in the above defmition: Natural, archaeological and
ethnographical monuments and sites and historical monu-
ments and sites of a museum nature, institutions displaying
live specimens such as botanic and zoological gardens,
aquaria, vivaria, and science centres and planetaria. Cf

National paper. Newspaper without a regional/local edi-
torial profile. —> newspaper
Nationality of film/video. Determining the nationality of
a film/video has become a maj or problem with the increasing
growth of multinational co-productions. In the most simplis-
tic terms, nationality of a film can be ascribed to the nation-
ality of the producer who is artistically responsible for the
production. In the case of bilateral and multilateral co-
production agreements the following factors should be taken
into account when deciding the nationality of a ftlm: the
nationality of the production company and its directors, the
nationality of the authors (scriptwriters, screenplay authors,
etc.), the actors and technical staff, etc. Cf. European Audio-

Newspaper. A publication issued weekly or more fre-
quently, carrying news of current events, opinions, features,
advertising and so on. Cf. ISO 9707:1991 (Information and

ofBooks, Newspapers, Periodicals and Electronic Publica-
tions) and UNESCO, International Standardization of Sta-
tistics on the Production and Distribution ofBooks, Newspa-

Non-daily. Newspaper issued 1-3 times a week. Cf. ISO

Production and Distribution of Books, Newspapers, Peri-

Periodical. A continuous publication that may be issued
at regular intervals (e.g. weekly, monthly, fortnightly, yearly)
or irregularly, containing a variety of articles, specialised or
designed for the general reader; a magazine or journal. The
term does not include newspapers. Cf. ISO 9707: 1991

Professional theatre group. Theatre group consisting of
professional actors, usually only hired temporarily, and only
having stage premises at its disposal on a temporary basis.
Programme channel. Radio/television channel transmit-
ting its own programme schedule. Cf EUROSTAT, Classi-
fication Plan: Audio-Visual Services (Rev.).
Programme profile. Main feature of programming of a
radio/television channel with respect to content and charac-
teristics (age, socio-economic satus, etc.) of audiences.
Public library is a library open to the general public and
operated by municipalities (including libraries in hospitals,
elderly-care institutions, prisons, etc.). Cf. Laws 1997, no.

Regional paper. Newspaper with a clear regional edito-
rial profile. —> newspaper
Rentai video. Video film released for rental distribution.
Reykjanes (=Reykjanes constituency) refers to munici-
palities in the south-west, excluding the capital, Reykjavík.
Sell-through video. Video ftlm released for sale at con-
sumer level.
Short film. Film with duration of up to 59 minutes. Cf.

Special interest paper. Newspaper covering a special
field (e.g. a certain branch of industry, business or econom-
ics, etc.), but which cannot be considered as a professional
publication since it is not solely distributed among members
within a certain industry or a trade. Cf. ISO 9707: 1991
(Information and Documentation: Statistics on Production
and Distribution of Books, Newspapers, Periodicals and

Special showing. Showings at film festivals and on other
special occasions.
Theatre. Professional theatre having permanent stage
premises at its disposal.
Website. An Intemet host storing HTML files on the
World Wide Web, or a specific subset of files stored at that
host.
