FEED INTAKE OF ICELANDIC EWES AND TWIN LAMBS
A preliminary trial was carried out on voluntary feed intake of fresh cut grass
lrom cultivated pasture of 3 ewes and their twin lambs during a 90 day period
in summer 1971.
The daily feed intake per ewe -j- 2 lambs was 3.90 kg dry matter, equivalent
to 2.65 feed units (F.f.e.). Growth rate of lambs averaged 205 g per lamb per
day. The ewes gained 9 kg in live weiglit on average during the periocl.
Digestibility determination (In Vitro) of the fed grass showecl that one F.E.
equalled 1.47 kg dry matter in grass. Multiple regression analysis of the results
showed the following significant changes (tables X—XII).
The intake of fresh grass dry matter intake ancl feed unit intake increased
with advancing age of lambs.
The intake of fresh grass decreased while dry matter intake and intake ot
feed units increased with increasing dry matter percentage in fresh grass.
The intake of feed units decreased with increasing amount of dry matter per
feed unit.
The carcass weight of the lambs fed indoors corrected to males was 13.3 kg
wliile that of 5 comparable lambs gra/ing on uncultivated pasture was 13.1 kg.
