strengthen the main nucleus of the
City as the centre for the whole of
the Capital Area and lceland as a
whole.” Greater densities and the
renaissance of the central city are
key words in the most forward-
looking planning science of our day.
50-Year Overview
Let's take off and fly over the
Capital Area of Reykjavík and try to
look ahead some 25-50 years,
because the bridge over the creek
Kleppsvík must last at least that
long. It is not intended as a tempo-
rary solution to one traffic knot in
the city. It is only the first of many
bridges facilitating communication
between the existing and future
inhabitants in the northern .district
and Mosfellsbær including people
living in the western and northern
part of lceland to the heart of the
Capital City and the centre of all the
Capital Area. But what about the
people coming from the other
direction? And where is the geo-
graphic centre from Kjalarnes in the
north and Hafnarfjörður in the
south? It is indeed the shallow sea-
water in the Skerja-fjord and in a
radius from there the Melar and the
old centre of Reykjavík, the Öskju-
hill, Kárs-ness and what is most
important, two large unbuilt areas,
the airport district in Vatnsmýri and
the Álfta-ness.
These are excellent areas for the
future development of the Capital
Area smiling at one another over
the Skerja-fjord but the peninsulas
have to be joined with landfill,
bridges and tunnels in the same
way as now is intended north of
Reykjavík. With a circular road like
this, easy access to the heart
of the Capital City is provided from
south, east and north.
The Centre of the Capital
Area
It is extremely important that the
first part of the thoroughfare
Sundabraut is built in connection
with the future possibilities
described above. A
natural policy decision has been
made to strengthen the Central
Area of Reykjavík as the centre of
the Capital Area and the whole of
lceland, and good accessibility to
this centre has to be provided from
all directions. It is literally dangerous
to direct more and more traffic
along one main road on the
Reykjavík peninsula and it is very
important for the safety of the
residents to distribute this traffic
onto more main roads.
The best connection of the roads
Sundabraut and Sæbraut is there-
fore extremely important for the
residents of Reykjavík from both the
traffic- and safety point-of-view.
Where the Reykjavík peninsula gets
narrower, it is necessary to take this
road underground. It should not be
difficult for a nation who has seen
the convenience of the tunnel
under Hval-fjord and intends soon
to drill tunnels through several
mountains in the northern and
eastern part of lceland to ease the
traffic conditions in the Capital Area
with similar construction.
Transportation is a key issue in bet-
ter planning. This will become a
main concern in the near future in
the Capital Area and vicinity. A con-
necting road for the Capital Area
with accompanying tunnels and
bridges will multiply the carrying
capacity of the traffic system and
would return the investment in a
short time through the economy of
continuous dense development,
improved urban life and a more
beautiful city. ■
