For the first of this pictorial series we choose London, of which Doctor Samuel Johnson said: “ When a man is tired ofLondon he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” It was Johnson who said he could repeat a complete chapter of “ The Natural History of lceland ” from the Danish of Horrebow, the whole of which ran: “ There are no snakes to be met with throughout the whole island." 19
