person makes it ethically permissible to cease
attempts at resuscitation and in countries

samþykkt á þrítugusta og fimmta þingi
Alþjóðafélags lækna í Feneyjum í október 1983.
1. Skylda læknisins er að koma mönnum til
heilsu og þar sem við verður komið, að lina
þjáningu og að bregðast þannig við, að beztu
hagsmunir sjúklinga hans séu varðir.
2. Frá þessari meginreglu á ekki að vera nein
undantekning, jafnvel þó um sé að ræða
ólæknandi sjúkdóm eða líkamsgalla.
3. Þessi meginregla útilokar ekki beitingu
eftirfarandi reglna:
3.1. Læknirinn getur linað þjáningar
sjúklings, sem er með ólæknandi mein,
með því að synja meðferð með samþykki
sjúklingsins eða nánustu ættingja hans,
ef hann er ófær um að tjá vilja sinn.
Synjun meðferðar leysir lækninn ekki
undan skyldu hans að liðsinna hinni
deyjandi mannveru og gefa nauðsynleg
lyf til þess að milda lokaskeið
sjúkdómsins.
3.2. Lækninum ber að forðast að beita
neinum þeim óvenjulegum aðferðum,
sem munu reynast gagnslausar fyrir
sjúklinginn.
1. The duty of the physician is to heal and, where
possible, relieve suffering and act to protect
the best interest of his patients.
2. There shall be no exception to this principle
even in the case of incurable disease or
malformation.
3. This principle does not preclude application of
the following rules:
3.1. The physician may relieve suffering of a
terminally ill patient by withholding
treatment with the consent of the patient
or his immediate family if unable to
express his will. Withholding of
treatment does not free the physician
from his obligation to assist the dying
person and give him the necessary
medicaments to mitigate the terminal
phase of his illness.
3.2. The physician shall refrain from
employing any extraordinary means
which would prove of no benefit for the
patient.
