S t r a u m n e s 80 miles, the nearest approach
50 miles.
7/6 The ice boundary at 6730/2800, 6606/
3100, 6612/3330 to 6530/3500. Ice concen-
tration in a 20 mile wide area along the Green-
land coast from 66 N to 6930 N consisted of
7/io small and 8/io giant floe, but farther out
of 4/io brash and 3/io small floe.
12/e From M/S Ægir 1800z: The ice edge
running from 6705/2500 to 6703/2530 thence
to NE. At 2100z the ice had disappeared from
this position.
16 / 6 Ice limit running froni 6900/2030,
6712/2354, 6700/3000 to 6530/3200 thence to
a point 25 miles SE of K. Dan. Concentration
Scoresbysund 10/xo giant floe including many
icebergs. A large polynyi, 30 miles wide, at the
mouth of Scoresbysund.
The concentration within the limits was
from !/io brash and blocks to 8/io brash and
small floe, but in a 25 miles wide area along
the Greenland coast, from 6800—6520 N the
coverage was 3/io small and °/io giant floe.
29/6 Ice boundary observed from 7000/1730,
6842/2112, 6730/2700, 6718/2930, 6618/3100 to
6500/3600. Concentration within the boundary
mostly 8/io brash and small floe. Two 25 mile
wide polynyi were observed along the coast
centered at 6918/2342 and 6942/2200.
29/e M/S Anton Dohrn: Iceberg in pos.
6624/2610.
JULY 1955.
The average distance of ice boundary from
Straumnes ab. .90 miles, nearest opproach
44 miles.
2/7 M/S A. Dohrn 1100 z: Dense ice field
from NE—SW. In front of ice field scattered
drift ice. Tenp —0.8 C air, —0.6 C sea. Fog.
Visibility 500 m. Position 6755/2456.
7/t The ice boundary observed from 6910/-
1530, 6900/1930, 6800/2300, 6740/2340, 6715/-
2410, 6655/2440, 6630/2455, 6610/2730, 6620/-
2910 to 6600/3010. In area ab. 20 miles wide
west of boundary ice concentr. was 4/io brash
and block with much drift ice. In area from
6900/1900 to 7000/1900 to K. Brewster to 6900/-
2400 ice consisted of 5/10 brash, 2/10 small floe
and 7/10 giant floe containing many leads,
50
cracks and polynyi. In area from 6900 N to 66
N insicle the zone the concentration was 6/io
brash 2/io small and ^/10 giant floe containing
few polynyi. A large ice island approx. 50 feet
high was observed at 6925/2315.
13/7 The ice boundary was running from
6530/3436, 6700/3036, 6730/3000, 6800/2818,
6748/2730, 6900/2330, 6906/2100, 6942/2018
thence to K. Brewster. The ice continued from
K. Tobin to 7030/2000 to 7100/1900. Ice con-
centration within the area consisted of 2/io
brash and block, 4/io srnall floe.
A large ice island (solid ice) was observed
45 miles wide (E—W) and 60 miles long (N—S)
centered at 6930/1900. Open water 15 miles
wide was observed from Kangerdlugssuaq fjord
to 6700/3000. Many icebergs were at 6736/-
2700, 6930/2300, 6948/2130.
22j 7 Ice boundary observed by radar from
6512/3700, 6448/3430, 6524/3348, 6542/3354,
6700/3000, 6700/2330 to observed limits at
6718/2248.
Ice concentration South of 6700 N was most-
ly 4/10 to 7/10 brash and small floe. Adverse
weather conditions prevented further obser-
vations north of 6700 N. Many icebergs at
6630/3300. Many leads and cracks vere sighted
throughout the entire area.
AUGUST 1955.
The ice belt along the Greenland coast has
become small and partly broken by opeti water.
The distance from Straumnés was between
150 and 140 miles.

2248, 6948/2100 to 7018/1800. Ice concentration
along the boundary limits consisted of 4/io
brash and block, but along the coast the con-
centration was 4/io to 8/io of brash and small
