Coastal reports:
5/12 The Coastal Guard Service reports a
big iceberg at 6648/2328 (about 30 miles off
Cape Straumnes).

FEBRUARY 1957.
The average distance of the ice edge from
Cape Straumnes 90 miles with nearest approach
of 66 miles.
1 /2 S/S Arnarfell 1430 z: A big iceberg sight-
ed at 5555/3525.
2/2 Same ship 0325 z: A big iceberg at 5811/
3210.
8/o Ice boundary on 6545/3440 to 6645/3200
to 6625/3100 to 6735/2620 to 6900/2300.
An area of brash, slush and small floes was
extending along the eastern pack boundary
with concentration increasing frorn south to
north. Numerous icebergs at 6545/3530 and
6745/3000.
18/2 Ice boundary from 6200/4155 to 6230/
4141 to 6330/4010 to 6520/3835 to 6515/3634
to 6704/3000 to 6807/2800 to 6732/2400. From
6815/2300 to 6830/2438 to 6930/2200. Con-
centration ranged from 8/io to 10/io-
2°/2 Ice boundary was running generally
from 6530/3430 to 6630/3310 to 6710/3100 to
6750/2520 to 6830/2520 to 6830/2320 to 6950/
2100.
Ice coverage ranged from °/io to 10/io- The
southern part of the observed area consisted of
6/10 brash, block and small floes, while the
northern portion consisted of °/io large floes
and fields. Scattered icebergs were sighted
throughout the area.
MARCH 1957.
The average distance of the ice limits from
Straumnes about 80 miles witli nearest approach
of 75 miles.
11/3 TFISE in flight to Greenland reports:
At position 6750/2150 ice coverage 3/s, at pos.
6800/2200 ice coverage 8/s-
18/3 Positions of pack boundary: 6500/3700
to 65C0/3600 to 6520/3408 to 6610/3300 to
6641/2950 to 6630/2720 to 6730/2500 to 6840/
2037 to 6957/2035. Concentration ranged from
3/io to 9/io, slush, brash and block. Numerous
icebergs at 6722/3240.
21 /3 From 6430/3700 to 6530/3300 to 6700/
3050 to 6750/2400 to 6925/1900. Concentra-
tion averaged 9/io, slush, brash and block. Two
icebergs at 6540/3405 and one small at 6445/
3315.
APRIL 1957.
The distance of the ice limits from Straum-
nes between 80 and 90 miles.
2/4 The German Research ship Anton Dohrn
reports close drift ice 90 miles off Straumnes.
Passable for big steam ships.
“/4 From Anton Dohrn: Drift ice at 6748/
2500. Concentration e/8 at 6754/2518, at 6730/
2536 slush 2/g. Edge of close pack ice at 6700/
2706 with drift ice along it.
10/i Ice boundary from 7010/2210 to 6900/
2235 to 6545/2930 to 6600/3130 to 6530/3200
to 6500/3600. Concetration averaged 8/io,
mostly of slush, brash and block. Ten (10) ice-
bergs at 6807/2604.
274 From 6530/3400 to 6630/3345 to 6625/
2850 to 6700/2730 to 6750/2555 to 6755/2455
to 6740/2510 to 6840/2240. Ten (10) icebergs
at 6745/2930.
MAY 1957.
The distance of the ice boundary from
Straumnes was between 90 and 95 miles.
14/r, Ice boundary from 6930/1800 to 6745/
2500 to 6725/2930 to 6650/3000 to 6630/3300.
The southern portion of the ice pack consisted
of brash, block and slush with concentration
increasing toward N. The concentration for
the northern part was 8/10 and consisted of
giant íloes and field.
Icebergs were sighted in the vicinity of 6645/
3318, 6825/2310 and 6915/2300.
22/5 Pack boundary observed from 7000/
2100 to 6915/2100 to 6750/2530 to 6750/2750
to 6730/2750 to 6700/3150 to 6530/3420 to
6520/3525 to 6530/3650.
An area of slush extended along the entire
boundary. Concentraton for the pack averagecl
8/io- No icebergs observed.
27/s Pack ice limit from 6920/2100 to 6720/
2800 to 6735/3030 to 6630/3200 to 6500/3720.
A few icebergs at 6830/2600, while they were
numerous in the vicinity of 6740/3000.
JUNE 1957.
The average distance of the ice limit from
Straumnes was 75 miles with nearest approach
of 35 miles.
