JON EYTHORSSON: Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1961 - Sept. 1962 Several icebergs were sighted. off the north- western promontories in November and Dec- ember 1961. — Else the Icelandic waters ivere free of drift ice throughout t.he period. Distances are given in nautical miles. OCTOBER 1961 No reports of drift ice available. 20/ío A clrifting ice block was observed at 66° 30'/21o 30'. NOVEMBER 1961 Toivards the encl of month the distance of pack boundary from Cape Straumnes was 70 miles, but the limits of slush and young ice extended 20 miles nearer to tlie coast. 25/n The boundary of drift ice was very ir- regularly extending from 7020/1900 to 6855/ 2350 to 6820/2340' to 6745/2400 to 6643/2700 to 6746/2730 to 6639/2810 to 6700/2945 to 6720/3015. Thence 6720/3110 to 6635/3100 to 6540/3500 to 6500/3630. Icebergs were sigthed at 6637/2140 and 6639/2130. From ships and lighthouses following reports were obtained: 25/11 to 30/n Three icebergs observed drift- ing slowly from position 6642/2151 towards Cape Horn, where they broke up forming a scattered field of block close to the coast. 30/11 Mfs Narfi 1400 z: An iceberg sighted 14 naut. miles N of Cape Látrabjarg. DECEMBER 1961 The average distance of slush boundary zvas about 100 miles off Cape Straumnes with near- est approacli of 60 miles at the end of month. The clistance of the main pack boundary ivas 5—20 miles farther off. 4/12 Slush boundary from 6930/2040 to 6910/2035 to 6820/2110 to 6800/2200 to 6743/ 2300 to 6738/2420 to 6720/2500 to 6710/2540. Pack boundary one mile inland of slush bound- ary. Large icebergs sighted at 6655/2240 and 6639/2417. 7/i2 Slush boundary was running roughly l'rom 6640/2700 to 6828/2000.. Pack boundary was 5 miles inland ancl fast ice 20 miles inland of slush boundary. A large iceberg was sigthed at 6640/2350. 13 /12 Slush boundary running roughly from 6520/3500 to 6750/2700 to 6756/2350 to 6818/ 2410 to 6840/2200 to 6925/2000. Icebergs sigth- ed 6525/2524, 6633/2354, 6635/2408, 6625/2200. 13/i2 Slush boundary very irregular from 6845/1920 to 6825/2025 to 6828/2250 to 6852/ 2410 to 6833/2325 to 6820/2425 to 6812/2340 to 6745/2350 to 6732/2450 to 6750/2530 to 6751/2515 to 6757/2530 to 6728/2600 to 6650/ 2525 to 6645/2555 to 6750/2700 to 6640/2607 to 6608/2620 to 6608/2735 to 6628/2810. Section of loose slush 6729/2430 to 6730/ 2520 to 6715/2550 to 6702/2525. Pack boundary was 0—40 miles inland of slush boundary. Brash in interim. Open water sighted at entrance of Scoresbysuncl. All ice- bergs sighted were icelocked in vicinity 6917/ 2325. 30/12 Slush boundary 6748/2125 to 6736/ 2330 to 6715/2430 to 6707/2440 to 6650/2550 to 6645/2800 to 6530/3400 to 6440/3500 to 6455/3700 to 6456/3750 to 6400/3955. Pack boundary was 0—15 miles inland of slush boundary. Brash in interim. t/2 The trawler Wolverhamton Wanderers reported a large iceberg and two small in posi- tion 14 to 18 miles bearing 230° true from Stalberg (o: Látrabjarg) corner. Dangerous to shipping. 12/i2 s/t Marz 2205 z: A big iceberg sighted at 6540/2550. Probably the same as above. Many reports of drifting icebergs off the northwestern promontories were received throughout the month, but the actual number of icebergs passing Cape Horn hardy exceed- ed 4. They were all first sighted to the ENE or E of Cape Horn drifting W and later SW- wards. They may have been “calfed” at Jan Mayen. 34 JÖKULI
