1 /12 A big iceberg (1) and a mall one (2) were sighted 10 miles ENE compass bearing from Cape North (Report from Baldur EA 770, 1600 z). 2/12 An iceberg sighted 21 mile ENE com- pass bearing from Cape N (3). 17/12 An iceberg sighted 19° true 21.5 mile from Selsker. 21/12 The same berg presume- ably observed at 6622/2252 and 2r7i2 at 6634/ 2306, passing Cape Straumnes (4). These icebergs seem to liave reachecl tlie mouth of Dýrafjördur at the end of month. On Dec. 28 tlie Coastal Guard ship Maria Julia reports 2 icebergs from 0.35 to 5.4 miles off Cape Bardi and a third one 4 miles off Cape Saudanes. There were further small blocks near the coast, probably remnants of the small iceberg (2). 3°/i2 Katla reports 3 icebergs off the lighthouse Fjallaskagaviti: One 255° magnetic 4.2 miles off, second 266° true 4.5 miles off and the third one 298° true 6.1 miles off. JANUARY 1962 The average clistance of the slush boundary from Cape Straumnes was about 70 miles with nearest approach of 40 miles at the beginning of month. The pacli ice boundary with con- centration S to 10 was 20—30 miles farther ivest. 2/i The limits of slush boundary was ob- served at 7020/1845 to 6945/1820 to 6830/1920 to 6830/2120 to 6635/2515 to 6615/2715 to 6630/2900. Pack boundary on the average 30 miles inland of slusli boundary. Block and brash in the interim. — Icelocked icebergs sighted at 6930/2235 and two at 6827/2325." 27/i Slush boundary from 7000/2030 to 6847/2140 to 6850/2210 to 6800/2430 to 6748/ 2420 to 6650/2825 to 6630/2835 to 6620/2925 to 6622/3055 to 6520/3255 to 6445/3700. Pack ice boundary was on the average 30 miles íarther west. All icebergs were icelocked. 31/i The limits of slush were running rather unevenly froin 7000/2030 to 6800/2500 where fog banks covered the ice to 6617/3105. Thence keeping almost straight line to 6510/3650. A large free-flowing iceberg was sightecl at 6517/ 3745. 2/i A strandecl iceberg was reported 0.8 mile within the mouth of Önundarfjördur on the northern shore. FEBRUARY 1962 The average distance of slush limits from Cape Straumnes was about 60 miles while the pacli boundary was 15—30 miles farther out. 0/2 Slush boundary from 6935/1725 to 6850/ 1810 to 6740/2200 to 6625/2700 to 6530/3345 to 6420/3700 to 6400/3800. Pack boundary 30 to 60 niiles inland of slush boundary. Block, brash and quantities of open water in interim. Large iceberg sighted 6625/2910. Great number icelocked icebergs in vicinity 7000/2200. 13/2 Slusli boundary observed from 7055/ 1900 to 6710/2445 to 6700/3000 to 6535/3120 to 6505/3315 to 6540/3325 to 6550/3430 to 6520/3630 to 6530/3730. Pack boundary 15 miles average inland of slush limits. Block, brash ancl quantities of open water in interim. to/2 Weather ship Alfa reports 1532 z: A big iceberg at 6203/3402. Dangerous to shipping. The iceberg is 29 metres high, 106 m long, drifting 114° true 0.7 mile pr. hour. 19/2 Alfa 2300 z: The big iceberg is now at 6138/3423 drifting SW about one mile/hour. MARZ 1962 No ice reports north of 65° N available. APRIL 1962 The boundary of broken ice fields and brash tuas at 70 miles average distance from Cape Straumnes, nearest approach 55 miles. 2U The boundary was roughly running from 6930/2130 to 6800/2200 to 6715/2400. 6/4 Broken ice fields were observed at 65 miles distance from Cape Straumnes, boundary running from 6730/2520 to 6812/2300 to 6930/ 2300 to 7010/1850. 17/i Ice boundary from 6715/2600 to 6620/ 3100. 21/4 Ice limits about 90 miles NNW of Cape Straumnes. MAY 1962 Average distance of drift ice from Cape Straumnes about 47 miles with nearest ap- proach of 22 miles on May 29. 3/g and 4/g Ice boundary from 6844/1732 to 6820/2120 to 6838/2225 to 6818/2315 to 6700/ 2409 to 6658/2422 to 6650/2436 to 6646/2449 to 6640/2521 to 6638/2540 turning 320° true for the next six miles. No ice visible at 6530/ 3036. Coverage at boundary 70%. JÖKULL 35
