North Iceland Glacier Inventory - 1975 Field Season The reports of three groups have been sub- mitted and are summarised below. Gljúfurárjökull (Leader: David Levy, John Leggott College). The map of the snout of Gljúfurárjökull was repeated so that we now have maps for 1973, 1974 and 1975. There is some disagreement between the accuracy of the maps for 1974 and 1975 but although parts of the snout have receded it seems clear that no noticeable retreat can be recorded for 1974/75. Retreat for 1973/74 was approximately 115 m. Long profiles were repeated. This group also visited and completed data sheets for nine other glaciers. Ultimately this information will appear in the monograph on Svarfadardalur and Skída- dalur (Basin 05/D). Thverárjökull (Leader: Derek Longley, Eves- ham High School). Once again the survey was hindered by extensive snow cover and results were not satisfactory. This type of glacier clear- ly is unsuitable for long-term monitoring. In- ventory data sheets were partially completed for four glaciers while two other glaciers were ex- amined from a distance. Thorvaldsdalur (Leader: Serena Bridges, Brit- ish Girl’s Exploring Society). A thorough ground reconnaissance was carried out by this group, but because of snow cover no ‘jöklamerki’ were inserted. Their report will probably be the first monograph resulting from the North Iceland Glacier Inventory project and should appear after a further season’s work. At the moment the data is being analysed by Dr. Nigel Griffey at the University of Sheffield Department of Geography who has located four more glaciers and a rock glacier. The group had to modify the glacier numbering given on the map pu- blished in the 1974 issue of Jökull and have divided the basin as follows: Group 1: The glaciers El, E2, and E3 contri- buting to the river Thverá. A large perennial snow patch is also recorded. Group 2: The glaciers E4 to E9 contribute to the valley drained by the Fremri-Lambá and Nautá. Field observation has added two other glaciers to this basin. Group 3: Strictly these three glaciers (F1 to F3) belong to the Hörgá—Öxnadalsá basin (Basin 05/F) but for the purposes of this survey will be included in the monograph. Glacier F2 (Dýjajökull) was not recorded on the original map where F2 was what is now F3. Barkárdalur (Leader: Clive Hudson, Plas Gwynant Outdoor Education Centre). A tho- rough ground reconnaissance has shown the ice masses of Barkárdalur to be more numerous JÖKULL 26. ÁR 59
