contained branch IX; it is easy to understand why the author of Bb has
omitted chapters 43-59, but difficult to see why a later editor should
want to add these chapters. Lastly, Finnur Jonsson does not even try to
explain the presence of a branch X in D.
Eugen Mogk74 generally follows Storm; thus he regards branch I as
a part of a lost Chanson de Roland.
Karl Steitz75 is mainly concerned with the relationship between Krns,
D and 5 in branch VIII. The tone of his paper is rather pretentious, but
his discussion of the problem is useful, mainly because of the material
which he has collected. His knowledge of Old Norse was apparently
slight76, and it is typical of his whole method that, although he knows
Storm’s book and quotes from it (p. 637, note), he arrives at the same
conclusions as Storm regarding the additional branches in D without
mentioning that there is nothing new in his results at this point (pp. 665-
73). His book was severely criticized by Mogk77.
Jan de Vries assigns a couple of pages to Kms in the second volume of
his history of Old Norse literature78, but there are so many mistakes in
his short paragraph that one is tempted to think that he has not read the
books he quotes (Storm’s book in particular). According to de Vries,
branch III is based on Les Enfances O gier, branch IV on Pseudo-Turpin,
Guitalin on Jean Bodel’s poem, and the source of branch IX is “das be-
kannte Lied von Guillaume d’Orange”(!).
In recent years Professor Paul Aebischer, of the University of Lausanne,
has published three books and an article dealing with various aspects of
Kms. In a survey of the epic traditions presented in branch I of the saga79
published in 1954, he concludes that the source of this branch was a
French Vie romancée de Charlemagne, to which a French remanieur had
added certain details. The translator of branch I was not identical with
