The Norse version of v. 535,
De tel barnage l’ad Deus enluminet
Kms: ok mikit lid hefir gu8 honum léo at stjorna (p. 49631),
is easier to explain: the translator has taken barnage to be the collective
term and translated it lid. It is rather strange that he, who was presum-
ably a priest, did not understand the term enluminet.
Compared with such examples as these, the misconception in v. 837,
where the angel, not Ganeion, is said to break the emperor’s spear, or that
in v. 952, where Tere Majur is translated land vårt, pat er helgat er
skurgodum vårum, are quite innocent.
Other mistakes are:
In v. 1145, Oliver speaks to Roland (a and S; Bb correct, Roland speaks
to Oliver, but it is an obvious inference).
V. 1349:
Dist l’arcevesque: “Ben ait nostre barnage!”
Kms: j>a maelti Turpin erkibyskup: “Gu5 hjålpi våru li3i (p. 51113'14).

Vv. 1391-92:

are translated:
(drap Sikoras,) siSan toku fjåndr vi5 honum ok foru (me3) hann til helvitis (p.
5122-3),
i.e. the translator has apparently thought that these verses applied to what
happened after “Sikoras” had been killed.
On the misunderstanding of V4 1355,
A San Donis est scrit in la geste (in a laisse added after O v. 1416),
which is translated:
En hat er ritat i sogunni af hinum helga Dionisio (p. 51210"11),
see Storm, Sagnkredsene, p. 29.
