The reduction of the conversation has been carried out in a fairly
sensible way, i.e. no important faet has been lost. It is not possible to decide
whether the translator or a French remanieur is responsible. If the text
is mainly that of the variant version which I have suggested may have been
the source of the saga, the combination of this text with that of O in
V4CV7 would, in this case, lead to a text that was identical with O 30.
In vv. 563-608, there is again an important difference between on the
one hånd O, on the other V4CV7 and the foreign versions, the latter hav-
ing the laisse which corresponds to O vv. 580-95 after O v. 602:
O V4CV7Kms
vv. 563-79: Marsilie speaks to Ganeion: “I have a
large array, will 1 be able to overcorae Charle-
magne?” Ganeion answers: “Not at all, you
should send him gifts and hostages, then he will
return to France and leave Roland behind, with
the peers, and you may attack and kill them, and
never again will the emperor be able to make
war on you.
vv. 580-95: Ganeion advises Marsilie on how the
attack on Roland and the French is to be car-
ried out. In the end Roland will be vanquished,
and Marsilie will have no more wars.
vv. 596-602: If Roland is killed, the emperor has
lost le destre braz del cors, and Spain will be
left in peace. Marsilie embraces Ganeion.
vv. 603-08: Marsilie makes Ganeion swear that he
will betray Roland, and Ganeion swears.

30 There is no reason for believing that there is a connection between the saga and
CV7. CV7 has a laisse in -ant, which is consequently based on vv. 550-62, while
the Kms text is probably based on vv. 544—19 rather than 557-62, cp.-----Rollants

del c'iel rather than v. 558: N’at t. <v. d’ici qu’en Orient. The detail pointed out by
