Summary
Volume measurements on larch
at Hallormsstaður forest.
The article describes the most recent ass-
essment of the first permanent sample plot
established in an exotic coniferous stand in
Icefand—Siberian larch of Archangelsk origin,
p. 38. The stancl was last assessed in April
1974 when aged 36 years and has been thin-
ned and measured at 3 years intervals since
1952.
The stancl has apparently reached it’s maxi-
mum mean annual increment (max mai) of
7 m3/ha at the age of 33—34 years (table 1
and figures 1 & 2). At this stage it is not
possible to say whether the stand has actual-
ly reached it’s max mai or whether the fall-
off in volume growth is due to a combina-
tion of climatic deterioration and infection
by die-back, Potebniamyces coniferarum, ancl
perhaps due to the erratic thinning treatment.
Talde 2. shows lliat the stand was thinned
too lightly in it's early life. A drastic thinning
at 33 years did not result in any response in
volume growth probably because the crowns
had become too thin and also because the stand
was infected again by die-back the following
season. Tlte erratic thinning has been mainly
chte to the lack of any home experience but
also due to the stand being thinned by differ-
ent persons with differing ideas on thinning.
A comparison is made between the yield of
the stand and that of other younger stands
(table 3) at similar ages. None of the young-
er stands have made sucli rapid initial growth
and although none of them occur on sucli a
fertile site type as the p. 38/stand climatic
deterioralion of 1964—71 plus the early ap-
pearance of larch die-back in the younger
stands has complicated any comparisons.
Finally it is concluded that whereas thc
plot has only a limited application for foreca-
sting production it can be useful for work-
ing out thinning treatments, especially on an
experimental scale.

Ég lít svo oft til baka til liðnra vinafunda,

að klæða okkar fósturjörð með fögrum traustum klæðum,
og að finna það í verki að hún eftir jttessu beið.
Ég minnist mætra vina, sem enn eru ofar moldu,
og einnig Jreirra mörgu, sem nú oss hafa kvatt.
En ég er alveg fullviss, þó þær kempur hvíli í foldu,
Joeír hvetja og fræða ætíð, ég veit að Jrað er satt.
