In celebrating the miUenary of the Ice- landic Althing, or Parliament, and at the same time that of Iceland as an organized community or a State, it is well to look back surveying the past, and also to con- template the present state of the country. In this issue of MORGUNBLAÐIÐ an attempt is macle to present to our rea- ders a survey of the establishing of the ' Althing together urith an outline of the .subsequent history of the institution as well as the salient points of the indust- rial and cultural history of the country. While a few sketches are given of the haæassing period of national misery, more attention has been paid to describing re- cent times of renaissance and progress and to illustrating the conditions at pre- sent prevailing in the country. Except as regards dates in the calendar there is at this juncture no question of the closing or the opening of an epoch. The people a/re exceedingly busy, and no matter v/here the spectator tnrns his eye this fact is borne out; everything seems to be ont'" half achieved, as things are apt to be in the busy season of the year. Progress is merely progressing, and so the story can be told onLy in part. But from this very fact it follows that the present ge- neration has an unshakable faith in the country and looks towards the future with an optimistic eye, believing that the country still possesses undiscovered re- sources as well as abundant power for developing these, and that the potential wealth at present latent will prove a lever ; for raising our little nation to greater | heights of economic prosperity and cul- tural importance in times to come.
