Mrs. Johanna Thordarson
Born May 12, 1864 — Died August 14, 1955
Mrs. Johanna Thordarson died at
General Hospital, Winnipeg on
August 14, 1955, after a lengthy ill-
ness, at the age of 91 years.
Mrs. Thordarson came to Winni-
peg in 1888. Two years later she
married Gudmundur P. Thordar-
son, a baker by trade. They lived
in Deloraine for a short time, then
moved to Winnipeg where they
established a home. Hospitality,
kindness and wholesome joy was
freely given to all who entered
their home. To many students from
distant places, who attended our
university or colleges, the Thordar-
son home was a “Home away from
home”. While Mr. Thordarson was
a member of the Board of Deacons
of the First Lutheran Church, Winnipeg, and for many years after
that, gifts of clothing and food were sent from their home to many
in need.
Mrs. Thordarson was endowed with a sunny disposition and a
smile that produced other smiles along the way. To the Thordarsons
were born eleven children, of these only five survived their mother,
some died in infancy and one, Gudrun, Mrs. C. B. Howden, died in
1947 at the age of 45. Mr. Thordarson died in 1946.
The loss of so many loved ones demanded fortitude and
strength to bear for Johanna did not inflict her sorrow on any one
but steadfastly and with a smile carried on to the end with con-
sideration for others who suffered. It stands to reason that a person
of Mrs. Thordarson’s character would have made many friends; she
rejoiced in the friendship of many, some young and some of very
long standing.
