82 ÁRDÍ S Manitoba Temperance Alliance Report By MRS. MARGRET I. BARDAL Ladies: As your representative to the Manitoba Temperance Alliance, I wish to report on the work of the Alliance during the past year. The program of the Alliance has gone along smoothly and quietly, although there has been a limitation due to the lack of an educational secretary. There has been splendid teamwork, and the executive secretary, William Potoroka, has set a pace of thoughtful and responsible leadership, guiding the program through a difficult year with imagination, initiative, and a fine sense of public rela- tions. Rev. T. E. J. Gibbon, our field secretary, has shown energy and effectiveness in accepting a heavy load of school and church work and in doing all of this work well. Among the significant events during the year was the annual Convention and Conference on Alcohol Problems of the Canadian Temperance Federation held in Winnipeg, November 28th to 30th. Every province in the Dominion was represented. The Alliance carried a heavy load of responsibility, including the financing of the convention. In February, a two-day Institute on Alcohol Education was held, primarily geared to the needs of teachers. Registration was 60, mostly teachers. The theme of the Institute was “Making Alcohol Education Effective”, and topics dealt with effective teaching philo- sophy, effective use of materials, and effective teaching techniques. Leaders of the Institute included three outstanding workers in the field, H. H. Hill of Seattle, John Richey of Minneapolis and Rev. John Linton of Toronto. The work of the Alliance has progressed and increased. More contacts, a greater variety of contacts, and more concentration of effort on many of these contacts! Peak interest in Manitoba’s liquor question has meant numerous requests for information and a depletion of our supplies of leaflets, pamphlets and mannuals. In a cause where the goals have to do with the spreading of authentic information, with considerations of personality growth
