Anna Halldórson
1880 - 1962
Anna Halldórson was born in
Iceland, the daughter og Sigurður
Björnsson and his wife Guðfinna.
The family came to Canada in 1883
and settled in the so-called Hnausa
district on the west shore of Lake
Winnipeg. There Anna grew to
womanhood, sharing the pioneer
hardships with the other young
people of that period.
In 1902 she was married to Jón
Halldórson of Icelandic River,
Man., now Riverton, Man. The
young couple moved to Víðir
where they farmed for a number
of years. They moved to Riverton
and then in 1925 to Winnipeg,
where she made her permanent
home. Her husband predeceased
her in 1943. From then on she was sheltered, loved and cared for
by her daughter and son-in-law, Ingibjörg and Jochum Asgeirson,
who never tired of making her welcome and comfortable. She
bore the burden of ill health in her declining years.
She brought up a large family, often on stringent means, which
was hard work. When the call came, she was visiting with her
daughter Sigrid, Mrs. Edward Hemell, at Flin Flon, Man.
Anna became a member of the Ladies Aid of the First Lutheran
Church in 1948, and she assisted that organization to the best of
her ability. She was buried from the church, on a beautiful fall
day with every member of the Ladies Aid, who was physically
able, present. They all came to pay their respect to a sister member
and to honor a loyal, hardworking pioneer.
May God bless her memory.
