Vélsmiðjan Foss is a machine factory
located in the town of Höfn in the
South-East of Iceland . The company
has extensive experience in working
with fishing companies and owners of
fishing vessels about the development
of winches and other solutions for the
industry .
Winches for fishing vessels
Foss has just released a new product
on the market; a type of gillnet-winches
for ships less than 15 metres . You can
adjust the winches to the size of the
boat, equipment and arrangement on
deck . Owners of smaller fishing vessels
have often faced the problem that
traditional gillnet-winches with rubber
drums aren’t powerful enough to
handle pulling the nets up from great
depths or when the nets have caught a
lot of seaweed . This problem is now
history with the new winch which is
equipped with a powerful steel drum
and power transmission equipment .
Better pull also means that the catch
will be less joggled around and there-
fore will improve its quality . This has
been confirmed by owners of several
Icelandic boats who have already in-
stalled the new winch in their vessels .
Combi-winch
Another item is a combi-winch which
can be used for seine fishing, trawl fish-
ing, and for purse seine fishing .
The first winch of this kind was sold
by Vélsmiðjan Foss in 1997, and is now
being installed in a ship being built for a
shipping operation in the Shetland Is-
lands . The size of the winch is adjusted
to the size and shape of the vessel, but
the winch itself is driven by hydraulics
with electrical controls .
