14/2 The ice edge was extending from 7000/-
1800 to 6500/3300. Coverage 8/io.
18/2 Ice edge 7000/1800 to 6500/3300 to
6500/4000. Concentration s/io brash and 3/io
small floe.
23/2 Gunnfaxi (TF-ISB) on a flight Reykja-
vík—Mestersvig observed the ice edge on 68°
00' N. 22° W.
24/2 S/T Magnolia. Large iceberg 52 fathoms
in pos. 6645/2115.
2s/2 Ice edge from 7000/1800 to 6630/2800
to 6500/3430 Concentration 8/io, consisting of
3/io brash, 4/io small and 4/io large flow.
28/2 Látravík (C. Horn). A big ice floe sigh-
ted ab. 4 miles E of the light house.
Winter ice in Icelandic fjords and harbours.
The Icelandic fjords only freeze when the
winter temperature is below normal. This was
the case in 1954/55 when the mean temperature
(t) and deviation from normal (d) at Reykjavík
and Akureyri were:

During the first half of February many small
fjords and shelterd harbours became covered
by new ice. On Febr. 9th the Skerjafjörður and
Elliðaáruogur near Reykjavík had become cover-
ed by winter ice and sludge ice. On the llth
Gilsfjörður was covered by solid ice from the
head to the west of Akureyjar.
17/2 Hvammsfjörður had become covered by
winter ice beyond Staðarfell.
16 / 2—28 /2 The harbour of Akureyri is
coverecl by winter ice, 5 to 13 inches thick
(13 to 33 cm). Ships had to be cleared at Odd-
eyri. The ice broke up on the 28th.
24/2 The Dýrafjörður was covered by winter
ice from the bottom to Þingeyri. Off Kjarans-
staðir the ice was safe for a walking person.
25 / 2 The harbour of Akranes was covered
by sludge, but fishing boats were able to break
through it.
MARCH 1955.
The distance of the main ice edge from
Straumnes seems to have been between 75
and 90 miles, while a. small belt of drift ice
approached the NW-Coast of Iceland during
the period 8th to 17th March, when it disap-
peared.
20/3 The ice edge was extending from 6942/-
1854 to 6442/3030. Concentration within the
area consisted of 2/io brash, s/i0 medium floe
and 3/io giant floe. Many icebergs 6800/2530.
2S/a The main ice edge was running from
6942/1700 to 6518/3300. Concentrtation 10/i0.
29/3 The ice boundary approximately runn-
ing frorn 6900/1120 to 7000/0940 to 7050/0900
to 6958/0735 to 7040/0520 to 7100/0340 to
7200/0000 to 7300/0320. The ice edge consists
of strips and belts of big floe but little brash
(From Norsk Polarinstitutt, Oslo).
Drift ice at the NW-coast of Iceland.
Through the first half of the month W-erly
vinds were prevailing over the Greenland Sea
(between Iceland and Southern Greenland)
and a considerable rnass of drift ice seems to have
been cut loose from the main ice edge and
drifted towards Iceland. On March 8 a Ice-
land Coast Guard vessel reported a close belt
of ice about 30 rniles off C. Deild (S. of fsa-
fjarðardjúp) and on March 14 the ice had
reached within 2—3 miles from the same pro-
montory. At the same date the coastal vessel
Hekla encountered some drift ice 10 miles SE of
C. Horn and continuous strips of ice from C.
Straumnes to C. Barði. The ice seemed to be
drifting towards the shore.
12/3 Trawlers returning from the fishing
banks hacl encountered some drift ice about
6650/2440.
15/3 M/S Litlafell reported a 6—7 mile broad
belt of ice extending from C. Barði towards the
mouth of ísafjarðardjúp at only one mile dist-
ance frorn the shore.
16/3 The Iceland Coastal Guard Service re-
ported a belt of ice beginning 15 miles off C.
Kópanes approaching C. Barði as scattered drift
ice and continuing from there as a 1 á 2 mile
broad strip round C. Straumnes to some 15 mil-
es off shore from C. Horn. No significant ice
reached E of C. Horn. — There was open Sea
outside the ice belt as far as sighted. The har-
