ín a few km at 150 m above ground. As the
field in a drill hole will be disturbed by lateral
inhomogeneities both above and below the
probe, the uncertainty in “regional” field at
any point subsurface may be as much as ±
2500 y, which is equivalent to ± 2 -10—3 G in
magnetization. This may cause misidentification
of e. g. short geomagnetic epochs in the data.
It will be necessary to check the inferred mag-
netization values at intervals by comparison
with cores or hole-wall samples, and/or to use
field values from within non-magnetic strata to
infer variations of the regional field down each
hole.
Susceptibility measurements have been carried
out on a large number of samples from drill
cuttings, showing the presence of non-magnetic
strata in some of these. The results confirm
that magnetic rocks occur to 1500—2000 m deptli
in the crust in Iceland. At this depth, reman-
ence values may be somewhat lower than at the
surface, due both to alteration (Fig. 6) and to
thermal demagnetization by the ambient tem-
peratures.

Unnið er að rannsóknum á möguleikum þess
að kortleggja hina varanlegu segulmögnun berg-
laga í borholum liérlendis. I greininni er bent
á vissa erfiðleika sem eru á þessu, vegna þess
að ekki er hægt að mæla meðalgildi segulsviðs-
ins kringum borholurnar með fullnægjandi ná-
kvæmni. Tekin eru dæmi um nágrenni tveggja
borhola, í Reykjavík og Vestmannaeyjum, þar
sem aðstaða til mælinga er slæm vegna lands-
lags, mannvirkja og óreglulegrar segulmögnun-
ar jarðlaga við yfirborð.
Bent er á, að hugsanlegt sé að fá allgóða
hugmynd um fyrrnefnt meðalgildi með því að
hafa vitneskju um legu ósegulmagnaðra jarð-
laga í borholunum, t. d. sets. Þá vitneskju má
fá með mælingum á segulhrifstuðli sýna af bor-
svarfi, sem eru mjög einfaldar og ódýrar. Mæl-
ingar þessar geta einnig gefið upplýsingar um
ummyndun bergsins. Sýndar eru niðurstöður
1 mælinga á svarfi úr borholum á jarðhitasvæð-
um, en aðeins í einni þeirra, við Námaskarð,
hefur jarðhitinn unnið á seguljárnsteininum í
berginu.
