cated at the southern margin of a 0.5 km wide belt
of ice-cored push moraines where the channel cross-
sectional area is at its smallest (Figures 4b,c and 2).
This cross-section doubled in width to 250 m but was
still the least changed out of all three cross-sections
(Figures 6a and b). The other two downstream chan-
nel profiles have greater cross-sectional areas but con-
tain large numbers of stranded ice blocks, which al-
most completely covered large areas of the riverbed
(Figures 3a and b; Tables 1-3). Shoals of grounded
ice blocks were commonly arranged as clusters trans-
verse to the flow direction (Figure 2). These clusters
