the translator, or possibly his source, has shortened a French text which
can have differed little from V4, and that he has succeeded in getting rid
of some of the most glaring inConsistencies and repetitions, and, secondly,
that he has managed to select for retention, in such cases as the Margariz
episode, the secondary laisses of the V4 text, and to omit all thé original
O laisses.
Other episodes where the Kms remaniement has in my opinion left
traces in the later versions are: in vv. 331—41 (O: Ganeion drops the
glove; Kms: he drops the letter; CV7: he drops both); 392-401; the ad-
ditional laisse between vv. 813 and 814, cp. the omission of vv. 826-30 in
the saga; the additional laisse in the first “trumpet scene”; additional
laisse after v. 1670 (O has vv. 1653-70, Kms has an additional laisse, the
other MSS have both); additional laisses between vv. 1679 and 1680, cp.
omission of vv. 1691-1701; omission of vv. 1851-68, additional laisse im
stead; additional laisse between vv. 1912 and 1913; the omission of the
Baligant episode and the revision of the Roncevaux scene with the addition
of the miracle of the shrubs (the miracle is a part of the scene in the version
rimée, and it was probably added by the jongleur who omitted the Baligant
episode); the peers buried at Arles (has left traces in the Chronicle of
Pseudo-Turpin only; the later version had to omit it, vide above, p. 242) ;
the revised scene of punishment (?). There are a few smaller additions
which have left traces in the later MSS, such as the additions after vv.
342 and 1144.
But there are also several changes which are not reflected in V4 and
the version rimée. These are the most important cases: the episode of the
war in Libya at the end of the poem; the Durendal episode (although
this might have been omitted by the editor who reintroduced the Baligant
episode); the episode of the death of Roland (connected with the Duren-
dal episode); the allusions to the “three batties” after v. 592 etc., and
possibly the apparently expanded version of vv. 642-50. To these may be
added variants in single verses, e.g. in vv. 126, 134, 374, additional verses
after vv. 105, 190, 197, 200 (Port oc Paillart etc.), 343, 1627, omissions
of verses such as vv. 2324 and 2330 (?), and the peculiar version of
vv. 2169-83.
There are some omissions which, although I have tried to show that
they cannot be due to the translator, could not have left any trace in the
later version, since they are simply the result of a desire to shorten the
