In every place where the Low German text differs from the High
German, the AM 696 fragment is closer to the former. Some of the
resemblances may be ascribed to personal style or to Icelandic idiom, but
the weight of all of them taken together indicates that AM 696 XI 4to is
based on the same Low German version which Gissur Einarsson used.
As for the Gudbrandsbiblia passage, it is striking that it, like the Low
German version and AM 696, speaks of the kings against the
South/North where the High German version calls them the kings
against Midday/Midnight, but no conclusions about the precise source
of this part of Gudbrandsbiblia can be drawn from this scanty evidence.
3.1. The hånd of AM 696 XI 4to is neat and vertical. Its chief
characteristics are: short a is always written a, never a; long a is written
double, aa; there is no way of distinguishing the length of i or o; the vowel
æ is written e; only one type of r is used (not counting abbreviations), the
r-fotunda, even in initial position (refsade, rutlade), except twice (Rikid,
Riki), when the small Capital is used; eg and og are abbreviated e and 6
(the abbreviation z does not appear).
3.2. This hånd does not resemble that of any of the other fragments in
AM 696 4to, nor that of any of the manuscripts discussed and
represented by plates in Westergård-Nielsen’s To Bibelske Visdomsbøger
(see note 7); this includes Stock. perg. 4to no. 10, GI. kgl. saml. 1318 4to,
AM 617 4to (written by Gisli Jonsson, according to Westergård-Nielsen,
p. 62), Stock. perg. 4to no. 5, AM 667 VI 4to, J.S. fase. II no. 18, Lbs. 1230
