The history of lcelandic design is yet
to be written and therefore much
information about Sveinn Kjarval
and other designers is in bits and
pieces and largely unwritten. It is
about time that this history should
be written.
In 1970 Sveinn once more moved
to Denmark with his wife and chil-
dren. There he continued his work
on the design and production of
furniture. Within long he expanded
his activities and in collaboration
with his wife and daughters Kolbrún
and Hrafnhildur Tove and his son in
law, Robin Lokken he established a
ceramics workshop and a gallery in
Jutland.
Sveinn Kjarval died at the National
Hospital in Reykjavík on February
10th, 1981 and is buried in the
Fossvogur Cemetary.

“the small dining chair“ as it has

also been called in 1963 along with
the rest of the interior for the cof-
fee-house Tröð in Austurstræti. The
production of this chair was contin-
ued in Denmark in 1979 and then
for the hotel Valhöll in Thingvellir.
Another, simpler edition of this chair
was used for the dormitory of the
grammar school in Akureyri in 1965.
This chair has once more been put
into production by the Danish furni-
ture company, Hansen og Sorensen
which emphasises good modern
design and has e.g. produced fur-
niture designed by Finn Juhl, one of
the famous teachers of Sveinn in the
Kunsthaandværkerskolen. Another
lcelandic designer, Erla Sólveig
Óskarsdóttir has also designed fur-
niture produced by this company.
Furniture and interior objects that
Sveinn designed can be seen in
many places. It has already been
mentioned that one of his first com-
missions was to design the interior
of the Museum of National History.
His work can also be seen in the
Hægindastóll. / Easy chair.
restaurant Naust in Reykjavík, The
Library of Hafnarfjörður, the library
at Bessastaðir, Parliament, Ithaca,
the library of the Reykjavík Grammar
School and the dormitory of the
grammar schools at Laugarvatn
and Akureyri and in the National
Hospital.
Sveinn also designed a number
of objects for churches in many
parts of the country, This work
can be seen in the church of
the Independent Congregation
in Reykjavík, the church of
Hvammstangi, the church annex
at Langholt Church in Reykjavík,
the church of Peter at Garðar on
Álftanes, Reykhóla Church and
Hólmavíkur Church. He also worked
on a number of commissions for
shops and other companies and
a great number of commissions
from individuals, wealthy and poor.
Sveinn Kjarval designed his furniture
both as independent designs for
production or as part of a defined
commission. ■
