Summary I. Prelude. The idea of establishing a spacious city park in the tracts which later were given the name Heiðmörk first appeared in print in Iceland Silvicultural Society’s yearbook in 1936 in an article by Hákon Bjarnason, who had been ap- pointed director of Iceland Forest Service in March 1935. Two years later, in 1938, the Silvicultural Society’s board sent the Reykjavik City Govern- ment a letter, suggesting that this idea be realized, and also suggesting that an extensive reforestation on the land be undertaken. In 1947 it was decided by the City Govern- ment to go ahead. A tract of 1350 hectars was fenced in in the latter part of 1948. II. The first planting. The first planting of trees took place in the spring of 1949 when 5000 seedlings of pine and spruce were planted. III. Preparations made for reforestation in Heiðmörk. By this time Reykjavík Silvicultural Society (hereafter abbreviated R.S.S.), formed in Octo- ber 1946, had taken over, Iceland Silvicultural 24 Society having been made an Association of local Silvicultural Societies in various parts of Iceland. On March 3rd 1950 an agreement between the City Government and R.S.S. was signed, whereby R.S.S. was appointed administrator of Heiðmörk. IV. „Pioneers in Heiðmörk“ start planting trees. R.S.S. let it be known, that groups of people (various small societies in town) might apply for a piece of land (mostly abt. 5 ha) for the purpose of planting trees in it. This arou- sed great interest, and already in the spring of 1950 29 plots were allotted to as many groups. Seedlings raised in R.S.S.’s nursery in Reykja- vik were given to the „pioneers”, and they also received instructions in tree planting. V. Heiðmörk’s dedication. Sunday the 25th June 1950 Heiðmörk was officiaby opened to the public. A pubiic cele- bration was held in Heiðmörk. The mayor planted a sitka spruce plant as a sort of cornerstone, and in a speech dedicated I-Ieið- mörk to the people of Reykjavík. There were also other speeches, song and music.
