N ÁTT Ú RII F RÆ ÐINGURINN 165 maintains that it is the only Hieracium species of the Section Alpestria which grows in tliis part of the country. l’he author’s investigations liave made clear that other Alpestria-species wliich have been described from NW. must be referred to H. elegantijonne viz.: H. paurocyma Om. and H. tapeinocephalum Om. (As lo H. oxyodontophorum Oskarss. from Brjánslækur, its sectional position may be doubtful). Tlien the author points out that H. elegantijorme and H. thulense Dalilst. have frequenlly connnon habitats. Therefore he concludes that these two species are of similar age in the country and of a very old origination. Lastly the authoi discusses the origin of H. elegantiforme, and he supposes that its true ancestor has been growing in North Europe long ago, and it has later split into many unities which now-a-days are represented by well definite species. Therefore the autlior is of the opinion that H. eleganliforme is one of these unities which has localized in Iceland and variegated in its own way from the beginning of Pleistocene.
