Vegetation of the island Papey
by Steindúr Sleindórsson
The Secondary Grammar School, Akureyri.
This paper deals with the vegetation of tlie island Papey, which is situated
off the south-east coast of Iceland, about 6 kilometres from the peninsula
Búlandsnes. The climate of the island is rather wet and the temperature
during summer is low.
The main plantformations are: the beach (fjaran), the cliffs (björgin), tlie
ponds (tjarnir) tlie bogs (mýrlendi), the grassland (valllendi), the heath (mó-
lendi), the gravelly flats (melar) and the clayey flats (flag). The plant lists and
the tables show the composition of the plant-sociations. The formations are
not distinclly marked from each other, especially the grassland ancl the heath.
As a whole arctic plants shcrw a higher percentage than usually in the Icelandic
lowland.
The Flora is rather poor in species, as only 124 species are found in the
island. Although the conditions are very similar on the near-lying peninsula
Búlandsnes and nearly the sanie plantformations are found there, some 40 to
50 species found in Búlandsnes are lacking in Papey. This difference, together
witli the paucity of species in Papey, which also is the case with other islands
around Iceland, seems to indicate the difficulties of plant migration over sea
and to strengthen the theory that a great stock of the Icelandic F'lora has
survived the Great lce Age in the country.
