Curry was born in Iceland, Novem-
ber, 1874. She lost her mother at
an early age and her father, a
district postal inspector, remarried.
She was sent to Reykjavik to be
educated. Later she visited her
mother’s sister, Sigridur, who was
the wife of Eirikur Magnusson, at
that time professor at Cambridge
University, England. There she
met friends from Iceland who were
planning a trip to Winnipeg,
Canada, and decided to join them
and visit a relative, Mrs. Andres
Reykdal. While in Winnipeg she
was employed in a photographic
studio for a time and her keen
interest in this art induced her to
study painting with A. V. Long, a well-known Winnipeg artist.
Later she visited Dakota where she had relatives, among them
Daniel Laxdal, and there she attended the university for a season
to gain a better knowledge of English. But her restless nature soon
brought her back to Winnipeg where she had many friends.
