Ardis Report
Lutheran Women’s League of Manitoba,
Glenboro, Manitoba, June 4th, 1955.
By INGA GILLIES, Manager
Madame President, Members and Friends:
It gives me pleasure to be here in this beautiful part of the
country, where we often have met at conventions, and on pleasant
visits to our friends.
It is my priviledge to present the financial statement of our
year book ARDIS for the year 1954.
700 copies of ARDIS were printed in 1954.
Advertising receipts were good, but sales of copies slower than
usual.
The reason—mainly, the language. As time passes, fewer people
read Icelandic.
During these past 14 years that the magazine has been tided
over the period of increased Language Problem, complaints have
appeared. The older people would have wished to see more articles
written in Icelandic, while the younger people maintain that they
cannot understand the Icelandic articles well enough to enjoy them.
As a result the sales suffer. But in spite of this difficulty, sales have
averaged about 600-700 copies per year.

evident that it will be necessary to increase the English even more
in the future, in order to carry on.
On the other hand, the picture is encouraging. Our salesladies
and advertising managers throughout the country, take a great deal
of interest and pride in the work. Overcoming many difficulties
(even the difficulty of bad roads last spring) did not discourage
them.
Through the years, our faithful editors have turned out reading
matter we can be proud of. The present editors live far apart,
yet find time to come together and make ARDIS a worthwhile
magazine.
When it is considered that all ARDIS work is voluntary, we
