Sunrise Camp Winds Up Its Tenth Year
After a most enjoyable and inspiring season the Sunrise Luth-
eran Camp at Husavick closed for the summer with a largely
attended concert August 22nd.
During this summer there were three girl groups, three boy
groups and a youth rally. Deans with the different groups were
Rev. S. Olafsson, Mr. G. Eliasson, Rev. H. S. Sigmar, Miss Eleanore
Gillstrom and Rev. Bragi Fridrikson. Pastors who visited the camp
and gave messages at different times were Dr. H. Sigmar, Rev. O.
Skulason, Rev. R. Jack, Dr. V. J. Eylands and Rev. E. Sigmar. Rev.
J. Fredrikson had planned to act as dean with one group but was
unavoidably detained. Nurses were Mrs. B. M. Paulson, Mrs. G.
Eliasson, Mrs. M. Helgason, Mrs. F. Bender and Mrs. B. Bjarnason
(two groups). There were 28 Junior Leaders, one assistant Junior
Leader. All the above mentioned service was voluntary.
During the past ten years more than two thousand campers
have been registered at the camp. Many of these have received a
badge for five years attendance, some have been there six or seven
times as campers and leaders.
As in previous years the camp was directed by Rev. and Mrs. S.
Olafsson. A special mention should be made here of Mrs. Christiana
Hofteig of Cottonwood, Minnesota, who has shown an unusual
interest in this work. During 1952 and 1953, she stayed for an eight-
day period as camp mother. She was assistant director and took
full responsibility for three weeks. This last summer she took on
the duties of a director for two weeks and two days. Mrs. Hofteig
performs her duties with dignity and efficiency and is loved by
all the campers.
