Many and varied have been the
monuments raised to honor the dead
—the great and the not so great of
this world—from the great pyramids
of Egypt and down to the lowly un-
marked graves of those whose mem-
ory lives only among the loved ones.
But it is doubtful if ever a more
fitting memorial was erected, than
this one to honor the memory of
Bertel Thorvaldsen. For all around
him stand his own works of art, the
stones to which he himself gave life.
The name of Bertel Thorvaldsen
looms large not only in the annals
of Denmark, but in the history of
modern sculpture, for he recreated
and re-vitalized the Greek-Roman
style, and brought to it a robust-
ness, and a simple manly directness
that captivated his contemporaries,
and won their respect. What he cre-
ated was always a true art, with a
real feeling of strength, beauty and
simplciity, and as such it has lasting
value. As he is revered in his mother
country, Denmark, he must also be
remembered with love and admira-
tion by the descendants of his fath-
er’s land,—Iceland,—for what he
was and for what he gave to the
world!

13. Bjarni Torfason, að Lundar, Man.
Fæddur 29. ágúst 1880 á Seyðisfirði.
Foreldrar: Skúli Torfason frá Sand-
brekku í Hjaltastaðarþinghá í Norður-
Múlasýslu og Jóhanna Martína Jakobs-
dóttir, fædd í Mandal í Noregi og af
norskum ættum. Hafði dvalið langvist-
um vestan hafs.

16. John Lawrence Thompson, í
Poughkeepsie, New York, 31 árs gamall.
Sonur Norman Thompson frá Pelican
Rapids, Minn., og konu hans Láru dótt-
ur Stefáns Johnson og Hólmfríðar
Hjaltalín Johnson, sem lengi bjuggu að
Upham, N.Dak. Mikill efnismaður, sem
átti sér glæsilegan námsferil að baki.

29. Gísli Jónsson, útgerðarmaður og
frumbyggi í Osland-byggðinni í Brit-
ish Columbia, á sjúkrahúsi í Prince
Rupert, B.C. Fæddur í Rangárvalla-
sýslu 8. okt. 1873. Foreldrar: Jón Ólafs-
son og Geirdís ólafsdóttir. Fluttist vest-
ur um haf til Selkirk, Man, 1902, en í
Osland-byggð 1918.

2. Ingimundur Ingimundarson (Good-
man), að Lundar, Man., 76 ára að aldri.
SEPTEMBER 1962
18. Hóseas Björn Pétursson, í Wyn-
yard, Sask. Fæddur í Argyle, Man., 2.
des. 1903. Foreldrar: Jóhannes Péturs-
son og kona hans, er fluttu til Wynyard
1905. Áhugamaður um sveitarmál.
OKTÓBER 1962
15. Þorgerður Þórðardóttir (Thordar-
son) saumakona, á elliheimilinu Betel
að Gimli, Man., 93 ára gömul. Fædd að
Signýjarstöðum í Hálsahreppi í Borg-
arfjarðarsýslu. Kom vestur um haf 1893
og átti lengstum heima í Winnipeg.
NÓVEMBER 1962
25. Dagbjört (Bertha) Potter, ekkja
John Sloan Potter lögfræðings, á sjúkra-
húsi í Vancouver, B.C. Fædd að Lundar,
Man., 14. okt. 1894. Foreldrar: Snæbjörn
og Ingibjörg Johnson, er fluttust til
Vesturheims 1888.
26. Guðrún Jónsdóttir Guðmundsson,
ekkja Guðmundar landnámsbónda Guð-
mundssonar á heimili sínu í grennd við
