Fig. 7. and 46 had ceased to function by 1960 and the enlarged Breidárlón was overflowing via the Breidá river leading to the Fjallsá. At this stage channel 43 was carrying meltwaters from a large lake system south of the medial moraine (Mávabyggdarönd). Within this lake system eskers can be seen standing above the lake sur- 34 JÖKULL 20. ÁR face. As the level of this lake dropped some of the esker ridges actually formed a divide be- tween drainage moving down channel 43 and drainage moving towards the Jökulsárlón.
