the area northeast of the fann Hænuvík
(map). For this survey only a side-scan
sonar was used and no dives were carried
out (Fig 9).
Area G and H. Vatneyri
The seabed in areas F and H is sandy and
the sonar did not show much vegetation.
Area g was approximately 1500 x 250
meters and area H was 1400 x 250 meters.
The survey area is more damaged in and
around the harbor, because of various
construction work. The side-scan sonar
suggested a number of places were there
were man made objects on the seabed.
Most of these objects are small and are
probably nothing more than discarded
objects from ships and boats. The sonar
showed some regular features in an area
west of the entrance of the harbor. This
could be the remains of a shipwreck but it
needs to be verified. To the southwest of
the Vatneyri peninsula are the remains of
a shipwreck, which probably is the wreck
of a French fishing schooner from the 19th
century.
Area I. Þúfneyri
Þúfneyri is a small peninsula to the east of
Vatneyri and the area east of the peninsula
was used at times as moorings for large
ships. The survey area was approximately
1000 x 250 meters. The depth increased
rapidly towards the south and about 200
meters from the shore the depth was about
40 meters. The sonar scan did not show
much marine vegetation and the seabed
consisted mostly of sand and gravel. The
scan did not show any sure signs of
archaeological sites but the scan did in
