possibility of a shipwreck, buried in the
sand (Fig. 10).
Area J. Hœnuvík
Hænuvík is a small bay on the northwest
side of Patreksijörður and a farm is
located in the bay. The farm has been
occupied since the Middle ages and today
it is one of the few farms in the region that
is still occupied. The coastline north of the
farm is rocky and throughout time many
ships have stranded there. In the winter of
1921 the English trawler Euripides
stranded about 800 meters from the shore
just northeast of the Hænuvík bay. All but
two crew members managed to get ashore
(Morgunblaðið 8.106) (Fig. 9).
The survey area was primarily in the
Hænuvík bay and was approximately
1300 x 400 meters. The survey showed
dense marine vegetation in the area, with
sandy patches in between and in some
places the seabed was rocky. The depth in
the area ranged from 5-15 meters and the
seabed got gradually deeper towards the
north and northeast. In the north sector of
the survey area the sonar showed clear
signs of man made objects on the seabed.
Large pieces of wreckage were scattered
on the bottom and one of them was most
likely a boiler from a steamship. This ship
