Náttúrufræðingurinn 162 SUMMARY Results of monitoring Common Gulls larus canus in Eyjafjörður (N-Iceland) in 2015 Common Gulls Larus canus (Fig. 1) have been monitored in the region of Eyjafjörður (N-Iceland), see Fig. 2, since 1980, and every 5th year since 1990.1,2 In 1980 the number of breed- ing pairs in Eyjafjörður was estimated 109–113. Since then the population has increased more or less steadily (Fig. 4). In 2015 the Eyjafjörður population was 622 pairs, at 68 breeding sites (Fig. 3). This is a 5,8% decline from the 660 pairs in 2010. Despite the 2015 decline 23 new nesting localities, not used in 2010, were recorded in 2015, while 37 sites used in 2010 were not occupied in 2015. As of 2015 a total of 165 Common Gull nesting sites have been registered, see appendix with all available popu- lation figures at each breeding locality. It is clear, that Common Gulls show considerable colony interchange, but this needs further study using individ- ually recognizable birds. Some decline between individual years could be due to poor breeding and pairs moving away from their breeding site. In comparison to earlier observa- tions bird numbers both declined and increased at many individual nesting locations in 2015. In most cases the rea- sons are unknown, but declines appear to be greatest in areas where man-made disturbance has been observed. The greatest increase (95%) took place at the Eyjafjarðará river delta at the head of the fjord. This could be due to bird decline at the nearby Akureyri airport where airport staff has actively reduced numbers of birds.6 At one site (Munka- þverá) where a serious decline (56%) was recorded, major gravel mining has been taken place, presumably prevent- ing the birds from nesting. Similarly, gravel mining took place at another site (Laufáshólmar in the Fnjóská river delta), where even proportionally greater decline occurred (67%). In the discussion, the Eyjafjörður region is compared to the rest of the country. A complete national census has not been carried out since 1980–81.1 However, it is known that since then Common Gulls have colonized many new sites in lowland Iceland, although still only few pairs nest on the North- west Peninsula and the southern low- lands. Using known counts an estimated 250 pairs bred in 2015 elsewhere in Ice- land than Eyjafjörður, with the national population estimated ca 880 pairs. In year 2000 the Eyjafjörður region held ca 70% of the Icelandic Common Gull population. Similar proportion of breeders was present in 2015, and the monitoring results still reliably indicate the changes in the Icelandic population. 1. Ævar Petersen & Sverrir Thorstensen 2004.
