appeared to be corrupt: such cases are listed in the
notes. The texts are printed in the orthography of
the manuscripts, with a few modifications for conveni-
ence in reading: 1. All proper names are given with
an initial capital. 2. Direct speech is printed between
inverted commas. 3. Full stops have frequently been
added to separate sentences written without punctua-
tion in the manuscripts, and in a very few cases a
stop which disturbs the sense has been omitted.
4. Compound words are printed as single words (even
though the manuscript divides them), except when
the first element is a genitive. 5. Chapter-numbers are
added. — In addition to this, words which are indi-
cated in the manuscript only by their initial letter +
a point are expanded between round brackets, e.g.
s(egir), d(ottir), etc. Illegible words and letters are
supplied between [ ], or, if restitution of the reading
is impossible, represented by dots between brackets
corresponding to the number of letters missing. Words
ánd letters which must be assumed to have been
omitted by the scribe in error are placed between ();
if what is wanting in the main manuscript is to be
found in one or more of the other manuscripts (and
is therefore thence supplied), the source of the addi-
tion is given in the notes. In cases where words or
names are clearly corrupt in the main manuscript, but
found in what can be taken to be a more correct form
in one or more of the others, the better form is sub-
stituted in the text and preceded by an asterisk; in
all such cases the reading of the main manuscript
is given in the notes.
