duction ofdeep water in the Greenland Sea at least.
The data revealed that both the classical model of
cooling at the sea surface and the double diffusion
model could be valid for deep water formation not
only in the Greenland Sea, but also in the Iceland
Sea. As both models were possibly valid the author
believed when evaluating the data (1975) that at
least one more process unknown to him could be
involved in the deep water formation in the seas in
question. This could be small scale and/or non-
stationary cyclonic circulation (eddies, chimneys).
This so-called “preconditioning” together with
physical processes like intense winter cooling at the
surface and water mass transformation involving
double diffusion in intermediate waters could lead
