Vegetational changes in the
fcnced area around Geysir
1960-1980

The area (15.3 ha) around the hot spring
Gcysir was fenced off in 1954 and thus pro-
tected from grazing sheep. Observations on
the vegetation were made during the
summersof 1960, 1966, 1973, 1976, 1978 and
1980. The vegetational cover has increased
markedly during this period and many
species that are rare outside the fence now
grow luxuriantly inside it. Species that show
no change are primarily those that arc little
grazed by sheep.
