sér ekki mörg slík tilfelli á lífsleiðinni. Gætni vill því gjarnan
sljóvgast, er tími líður. Við höfum hér enga samskráningu á meiri
háttar fylgikvillum lyfjanotkunar, en væri ekki full ástæða til að
koma henni á og senda upplýsingar við og við til lækna, ekki til
þess að gera þá neikvæða gagnvart notkun lyfja, heldur til þess
að minna þá á að nota lyf með gætni.
SUMMARY
Of 15 patients admitted with aplastic anemia during 1957—1966
incl. to the University Hospital in Reykjavík (Landspítalinn), 6 had
prior history of having used chloramphenicol. Only one of them is
living. One patient had used many antibiotics and chemotherapeutics
for a number of years but a definite history of chloramphenicol usage
was not available. She is still living.
The pertinent literature, mainly on the pathogenesis of the hæmato-
poietic depression induced by cholramphenicol, is reviewed. The two
types of depression, i. e. aplastic anemia and reversible erythroid in-
hibition are pointed out.
Although a good drug when it is indicated, chloramphenicol should
only be used when other equally effective and less dangerous drugs
are not available. Thus, the much too frequent administration of
chloramphenicol in upper respiratory viral infections and other re-
latively harmless infections is to be deplored.
