Cases RELATIVE ACTIVITY OF SERUM CHOLINESTERASE Mynd 3. Virkni cholinesterasa hiá arfhreinum (homozygous) og arfblendnum (heterozygous) einstaklingum, alls 51. — Skýring: Arfhreinn eðlilegur einstaklingur (skástrikaður í 9. súlu frá vinstri) hefur cholinesterasavirkni svipaða beirri, sem tíðast finnst hjá arfblendnum. Hann er faðir þeirra tveggja barna, sem höfðu minnsta cholinesteras,a' virkni í hcpi arfhlendinna (sbr. skil). ig 0.27 í þessum hópi einstaklinga. Hjá 25 fslendingum, sem að hluta voru valdir með tilliti til elliptocytosis, en óvaldir með tilliti til Cr, var þetta tíðnihlutfall 0.16 (Robson and Harris, 1966).10 Alger skortur á þessum efnakljúf hefur enga vanheilsu í för með sér (Hart and Mitchell, 1962).11 Ýms lyf valda minnkun á þessum cholinesterasa, ýmist með því að gera hann óvirkan (inhibitory effect) eða minnka framleiðslu hans í líkamanum, en hann er álitinn myndast í lifur. Þannig getur áunnin minnkun eða skortur á serumcholinesterasa gefið til kynna lifrar- sjúkdóm. Breytingum á rafdráttarmynstr- um serumcholinesterasa hefur verið lýst hjá dánu fólki (Árnason and Bjarnason, 1972)2 SUMMARY Respiratory paralysis due to muscle re- Iaxant (suxamethonium) in hereditary de- ficiency of serum cholinesterase. 1. During an investigation of cousin marriages in Iceland, five brothers and sisters were found homozygous for the „silent“ plasma cholinesterase gene. 2. Clinical information on two family members is presented and discussed. 3. Possibility of the presence of „nearly silent" plasma esterase gene, in one of the family units investigated, is suggested.
