SUMMARY
Alcohol and Traffic in Iceiand.
The aggregate alcohol consumption in Iceland during
the period 1966 to 1980 is compared with the traffic
volume, traffic accidents and drunken driving through
the same period. The data have been compiled from
statistical records for the Joint Nordic Study of Alcohol
Problems.
The time series are compared and correlated to throw
some light on the relationships between these variables.
The results show that there is only a minor relationship
between the development of traffic volume and traffic
accidents, but a close relationship is found between
traffic accidents on the one hand and the aggregate
alcohol consumtion and drunken driving on the other.
Consumption of spirits has the closest relationship with
traffic accidents, while both the consumption of spirits
and wine have a close relationship with drunken driving.
