I maí síðastliðnum fór undir-
ritaður á ráðstefnu PWG
(Permanent Working Group of
European Junior Doctors), en
það eru evrópusamtök ungra
lækna. íslenskir unglæknar eru
ein af níu stofnþjóðum samtak-
anna en nú taka þau til 24 þjóða
og um 155.000 unglækna. í
fyrstu var flogið til London þar
sem ég hitti félaga okkar Pál
Matthíasson eldhuga og verð-
andi geðlækni. Hann er búinn
að koma sér þar vel fyrir og
stundar geðlækningar af kappi
við hið heimsþekkta og virta
sjúkrahús sem kennt er við
Mosley. í London áttum við
feykigott kvöld yfir léttvínum á
Cork and Bottle, áströlskum
vínkjallara við Hanover Square
í hjarta Lundúna. Páll er þegar
orðinn klúbbfélagi og einn af
velunnurum staðarins. Daginn
eftir, miðvikudaginn 30. apríl,
átti ég stefnumót við dr. Ingvar
Bjarnason sérfræðing í melting-
arsjúkdómum og íslenskan að-
stoðarlækni hans við King’s
College Hospital. Voru þeir
hinir viðkunnalegustu og gengu
með mér um hinar ýmsu deildir
sjúkrahússins um leið og þeir
fræddu mig um starfsemina og
heilbrigðiskerfið í Bretlandi.
Þeir leyndu þó ekki þeirri skoð-
un sinni að ef ég ætlaði mér ekki
eingöngu í rannsóknir þá væri
Bretland afleitur kostur hvað
varðaði nám í lyflækningum.
Upplifunin var engu að síður
ótrúleg og ógleymanleg. Eftir-
minnilegast voru hinar svoköll-
uðuFlorence Nightingale deild-
ir sem eru litlir salir með sjúkra-
rúmum meðfram veggjum og
frh. á bls. 772
medical work. The proposals
aim not only at defining the con-
tent of medical work (diagnosis,
treatment of patients, informa-
tion to patients, research, qual-
ity assurance and development,
development of the medical
profession, postgraduate med-
ical training, as well as adminis-
tration and management). The
aim is also to ensure that treat-
ment of and responsibility for
the individual patient are not
unnecessarily fragmented as
stated in the conference back-
ground paper:
„It is not possible to ensure
meaningful and professionally
developing medical work if the
various function related to the
patient are divided and re-di-
vided at the different hierarchi-
cal levels within the medical
parties"
Further: „Ideally, the same
doctor should receive the pa-
tient, take the medical history
and, upon consultation with
other doctors, make a diagnos-
is, initiate treatment and fol-
low- and give information to the
patient and other relevant par-
ties.“
However the reality is rarely
so.
Thus, the participants in the
conference will be presented
with a number of concrete pro-
posals for the future organiza-
tion of medical work with the
aim of improving the working
conditions of European doctors
as well as to ensure better conti-
nuity in the relations between
the individual doctor and pa-
tient.
The proposals were adopted
at a PWG meeting held in Tallin
in May 1997 and it is hoped that
the Policy Statement and the
deliberations at the conference
will have considerable impact in
the years to come.
