Aim: Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been more common among the
elderly, but in recent years the disease has been diagnosed more
often in younger people. Risk screening for the development of type
2 diabetes mellitus, along with lifestyle support and education, can
decrease prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The measurement
tool “The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score” (FINDRISC) is used to de-
termine the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in the next
10 years. The aim of this study was to investigate: a) the proportion
of people in a specified cohort which are at risk of developing type
2 diabetes mellitus, b) to obtain information about usefulness of
the FINDRISC as a risk assessment tool in Iceland.
Method: The method was descriptive and cross sectional. Employ-
ees of a certain company (n=150) were invited to participate. 117
subjects met criteria for participation, of which 82 agreed to partic-
ipate with a 70% response rate. Participants answered the questions
in FINDRISC and measurements of height, weight, waist circum-
ference, blood glucose level, and blood pressure were conducted.
Body mass index (BMI) was calculated. FINDRISC consists of 8
questions, the total score being from 0–21. Higher score indicates
increased risk, where the cut-off score ≥9 indicates risk for devel-
oping type 2 diabetes mellitus. Descriptive statistics and inferential
statistics were used for the data analysing.
Results: The results showed a mean age of 42.6 (SD15.0) years and
27 parti cipants (32.9%) scored ≥9 on FINDRISC and are therefore
at risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in the next 10 years.
Significantly more women (42.2%) than men (18.9%) had an in-
creased risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (p=0.03). The
mean age of those with the score of ≥9 was 50.8 (SD14.3) years, but
mean age of those with score of ≤8 was 38.7 (SD13.4) years
(p>0.001). Regression analysis showed that higher blood glucose lev-
els and higher systolic blood pressure were associated with higher
FINDRISC scores.
Conclusions: FINDRISC is practical for the screening of type 2 di-
abetes mellitus and is simple to use. There is a need for regular
screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus in Iceland, and also increased
awareness and education from nurses to people at risk of develop-
ing type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Veikleiki rannsóknarinnar er einnig að ekki hefði átt að útiloka
þá sem ekki töluðu og skildu íslensku þar sem FINDRISK-mats -
tækið byggist á hnitmiðuðum spurningum og einföldum mæl-
ingum, því er ekki hægt að meta notagildi FINDRISK-mats -
tækisins hjá öðrum þjóðernishópum á Íslandi. Það er einnig
veikleiki að ekki var spurt um menntun þátttakenda. FINDR-
