enable senior citizens to obtain
suitable housing at a reasonable
price. All the flats are designed
according to the norm for hous-
ing for the aged, such as wheel-
chair/walking frame accessibility.
Fire prevention is good and
maintenance is little.
The building of these accommo-
dations considerably reduces the
financial costs the state and the
City of Reykjavík would usually
incur in providing service to the
elderly. The average age of the
residents is almost the same as
of those in homes for the aged,
or around 83,5 years, while the
oldest inhabitants are 100-years
old. The buildings of the
Association are not built for profit.
Compared to the market price,
the price of the flats is low. Most
of the work done by the
Association is on a voluntary
basis; dues are low and office
costs are kept to a minimum.
Properties of the Association are
kept at a minimum, but the
Association owns its office on
Hafnarstræti 20 debt-free and
employs one employee, part time.
Low running costs and careful
selection of designers and con-
tractors and good financial
control result in low construction
costs.
Only members of the Association
of the Elderly can buy the flats.
The maximum sales price is tied
to the cost of building index,
making it possible to control their
price. The need for flats for the
elderly is great. The fact that the
price of flats, built by the
Association of the Elderly is at
cost and according to quality
standards and closely supervised
makes them an interesting
choice. The owners of the flats
are very pleased with them and a
number of members are waiting
for more to be built. ■
