SUMMARY
In this paper is given a thorough*going description of the degenera=
tive diseases of the joints and spine, and new points of view are put
forwarđ with special references to the etiology.
The pathologicahanatomical changes are described, and a brief survey
of the symptoms is given.
The treatment (physical, medical, and surgical) of these diseases is
described and d scussed, the greatest importance being attached to the
description of intraarticular injections of hydrocortone, with full refe*
rences to articles by Hollander, Howard, Stevenson, Duff, Egilius, and
others. The tecnical skill and the dosage of hydrocortone are thoroughly
described, and the importance of sufficient doses is emphasized (large
joints 125 mg, smaller joints 62'/2 mg).
78 patients casually picked out of a greater number treated in the
medical department, the county hospital Naestved, Denmark, from 1954
to 1959, are critically reviewed. In tables the author gives a survey
of the group of patients in question with regard to age, sex, dosage,
and result of treatment.
The paper is finished with a detailed discussion about the degenera*
tive diseases in joints and spine, and the author puts forward lines
for treatment profylactically and therapeutically, and reflexions on other
diseases in joints and bones are put forward, and newer serological
tests are mentioned.
Finally it emphasizes the hazard in treating these diseases with corti»
sone and other steroids.
