sjúkdómurinn sem slíkur er ekki sjáanlegur á líkama þeirra. Slíkir einstaklingar njóta því lítils skilnings annarra, sérstak- lega þegar við bætist að sjúkdómur þeirra er oft talinn sjálfs- skaparvíti. Ljóst er að til þess að breyting verði hér á þarf að eiga sér stað grundvallaráherslubreyting, ekki einungis í íslenska heilbrigðisskerfinu heldur einnig í samfélaginu öllu. Þakkarorð Margir hafa veitt mér ómetanlegan stuðning við vinnslu þessarar rannsóknar. Má þar einkum nefna fjölskyldu mína, vini og hjúkrunarfræðinga á Vífilsstaðaspítala. Þó eiga þátt- takendur þessarar rannsóknar sérstakar þakkir skildar fyrir að eyða dýrmætri orku sinni og tíma í að ræða við mig, að opna heimili sín fyrir mér og á allan hátt að veita mér innsýn inn í líf sitt eins og þeim var framast mögulegt. Abstract The study describes the lived experience of people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) based on Newman’s theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness. Applying hermeneutic phenomenology, the researcher engaged in five in-depth interviews with ten participants. Results demonstrate the participants’ life pattem of isolation and being closed in. Themes characterizing the participants’ life pattem were: a) Resignation to the situation as it is - A way to survive, b) Unsuccessful solutions to traumatic events, c) Difficulties in expressing oneself and in relating to others, d) Conflict between intemal needs and external expectations, e) Few words for breathing difficulties, f) Activity restrictions, g) Interplay between emotional condition and breathing difficulties, and h) Work of high priority.
