Abstract
The study describes the lived experience of people with Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) based on Newman’s theory of
Health as Expanding Consciousness. Applying hermeneutic
phenomenology, the researcher engaged in five in-depth interviews
with ten participants. Results demonstrate the participants’ life
pattem of isolation and being closed in. Themes characterizing the
participants’ life pattem were: a) Resignation to the situation as it is -
A way to survive, b) Unsuccessful solutions to traumatic events, c)
Difficulties in expressing oneself and in relating to others, d) Conflict
between intemal needs and external expectations, e) Few words for
breathing difficulties, f) Activity restrictions, g) Interplay between
emotional condition and breathing difficulties, and h) Work of high
priority.
