Summary
Coin finds from theViking age are rare in Iceland. Prior to the finding of the large hoard
at Gaulveijabær (South Iceland) found in 1930, only seven coin finds were recorded.The
last account of coins found in Iceland was made by Dr. Kristján Eldjárn in The Yearbook
of Nordisk Numismatisk Union for 1948. Despite some quite extensive excavations
during the period 1965-1995 no coins were found. In 1964 a cut Cufic dirhem from
850-950 AD was found in a boatgrave in Vatnsdalur, Patreksfjörður (West Iceland).The
following year Dr. Kristján Eldjárn found a Otto III of Saxony 983-1002 dinar in Þjórs-
árdalur (South Iceland) near a settlement farm. A grave discovered in 1995 in Eyrarteig-
ur, Skriðdalur (East Iceland) yielded a ffagment of a penny frorn Eadvig of England 959-
975. At Bessastaðir (South Iceland) half a Norwegian coin of anonymous issue
1080-1095 was found in 1996 during an archaeological excavation. In addition to the
previously found coins two further were found in 1999; both are imitations of the
Anglo-Saxon penny. One was found at Thingvellir and is of Norwegian orgin and the
other at a site near Seyðisfjörður; it is only a fraction and hard to identify but is most
likely Danish.
